Sprinkles
‘Hot Fudge and Sprinkles’ is an appaloosa pony, 14.1 hands high, that is in his mid-twenties now. Katelyn got him when she was six and a half, and they did everything together until she sadly grew too big for him. We bought him from a barn that had used him for summer camp, but most of their riders were intimidated by his large stride and spookiness. They knew nothing about his background, and I’d love to find out what breeding created all these amazing spots. We spent tons of time letting him know us, and together they became a fierce team. They competed in eventing, which is both of our love, but she was also high-point for English, speed and Dressage in our local 4H. Like every little girls pony, he did everything she wanted him to, except when he didn’t. He just stands and looks pretty now because we don’t have any little girls his size, but he is totally part of our family.
Hank
‘Absolutely Everything’ is his show name, ‘GL Hank is Country is his registered name, Hank is a 15.3 hand, 14-year old quarter horse we bought three years ago for Katelyn’s move up horse. Unfortunately, simply put, they hated each other in the saddle. (Wouldn’t you know the one who needs no grain and very simple hoof trims every seven weeks wouldn’t work out for us.)
After a rocky start he became my horse for a year until my knees said no more riding. When a friend discovered his reining training, k got interested in trying that out and they have had fun for the last year doing local ranch riding and ranch reining events. Eventing remains her first love however, so if we can find the right place for Hank he will probably go be a full-time reiner. Until then he also stands and looks pretty and keeps Sprinkles company when Wally is gone to shows. He is quietly the boss of our herd of three so he also keeps everyone in line.
Wally
‘What’s in Your Wallet’ is our 13-year old 16.3 hand thoroughbred that she moved up to two years ago when she got too big for Sprinkles. Thoroughbreds are race horses, and Wally lived at the track for his first several years. However based on his record I don’t know if you could really say he raced as much as you’d say he participated. Mostly I think he did what he does best, stood and looked pretty. Wally is absolutely the kindest horse you will every find, and he absolutely loves his kid. He knows what she wants before she asks and they are building into quite the team for eventing. The goal is to be ready to compete in a recognized event in the coming show season. Wally is our high-maintenance child, with custom shoes every four weeks from a farrier that lives and hour away, and you don’t even want to know how much feed we pour into his skinny body. It is all worth it whenever I see their partnership.
